It is even worse. In Tramp 2.0, tramp-handle-process-file calls
internally shell-command. The latter function does not support the
file-name-handler mechanism in XEmacs, so there is no chance that
process-file works properly with Tramp 2.0 and XEmacs.
If nothing comes up, I'm inclined to apply the ugly patch I
posted and
accompany it with a warning that it won't work for tramp >= 2.1 and perhaps
additionally wrap it so that if it fails, it does so with an understandable
explanation what happened.
That seems to be the last resort.
