Well, take a look at
"/usr/local/xemacs-beta/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/dired/"
which _is_ in your load-path, and should contain dired.el and
dired.elc.

got this fixed, it looks like i had stuffed my packages tree
reinstalled it and all was fine
