It hate to say it once again, Didier, but the directory name issues
were decided long ago.
And I hate to say it once again, Michael, but I'm sorry, the fact
that they were decided long ago doesn't imply that they are good, and actually
they are *very* bad. I strongly believe that not only the naming conventions
could be improved, but whole lib and package localization as well. I don't
think there has been enough discussion on this.
It's now merely an issue of phasing the obsolete ones out.
Changing them
once again would really piss the users off, I dare say.
21.0 is gonna be the first release with a documented packaging
system. The current naming conventions are known only by people on this list
so that doesn't count. Moreover, I consider it a real shame that this XEmacs
is gonna be released with those naming conventions. I would have added this to
Ben's showstoppers page. Just because we want it out quickly, we're gonna
provide the users with something messy, and make it even more difficult for us
to fix things up later :-(
In know very well that I'm about the only one that loudly ranted about
the way things will be done in 21.0 (maybe Jan and some others were with me,
I'm not sure), but the other guys didn't express any particular satisfaction
either. So I'm not gonna give up on this. Even if I have to add something like
`mail -s RANTING xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org' in my crontab :-)
