I don't know if we can use the code (it's GPL but I don't know about
assignment---I guess it must be because of `GNU' Ghostscript), but
Ghostscript has been doing this for many years with its "echogs"
program. I don't know how broad its coverage of varying systems is,
I've only used it on DOS and Linux.
echogs has a bunch of other "features" as well.
