The '--dired' flag is turned on to ls(1). dired should be able to
slurp in that (and make good use of it) but apparently is doesn't.
No, it's not Dired, it's `insert-directory' that does it. But only as
of 21.5, and I'm reasonably sure the patch hasn't been applied to
21.4. That's why doing it in 21.4 is not a good idea.
