What is it you need that a sexp (s-expression, balanced expression)
doesn't give you?

of a nested "if/fi"?
IMO it was not possible in a simple way.
sh-beg-end.el implements that.

Precisely. sh-beg-end does it, but is hard-coded for its purpose.
