Is the customization of Options at fault? [was: Poitou blanched]

I think that the problem probably is in Jan Vroonhof's translation of much of the options menu stuff to custom; he excised a lot of "unnecessary" code. (This caused a lot of grief with non-ISO-8859-1 fonts for me.)
