XEmacs 21.2 (in beta) uses getaddrinfo if available on the system, but there are apparently problems with buggy implementations, e.g. on AIX 4 and Red Hat 6.0 (but not 6.1). XEmacs maintainers want to have networking that Just Works, so are considering options like using gethostbyname() by default for a few more years. Many other free software projects have similar concerns. Martin
