I finally got back to looking at this (instead of holding back an 
xemacs rebuild on pkgsrc arch, then experimenting with pkgsrc gcc7 to 
replace Arch's gcc8), and it turned out that a mere "CFLAGS+= -no-pie" 
in the package Makefile gets both xemacs214 and 215 releases back on 
track with gcc8.
