Most modern desktop toolkits have a concept of a theme, trying to make
GUI elements (such as buttons, menus, etc.) look similar in
applications. In such an environment, the XEmacs button that invokes
#'compile, would use the same icon as the compile button in other
IDEs. All applications would use similar button and menu styles, etc.
Normally desktop themes are managed centrally, so switching to a
different theme can notify applications about reloading different GUI
elements.
