Try list-text-properties-at on a colored word in any buffer. Send us the contents of the *Text Properties* buffer. e.g. I get this on a cited line in message-mode: Text properties at 1568: lazy-lock t face message-cited-text-face font-lock t And this on a <p> tag in a buffer visiting xemacsweb/index.html: Text properties at 6887: lazy-lock t face font-lock-type-face font-lock t I suspect font-lock-mode is not on in your buffer. Please do M-: major-mode and M-: font-lock-mode in the buffer in question. Then do M-x view-lossage and copy the information from the *Help: lossage* buffer into your mail buffer.
