It occurs to me that I did _not_ remove the buffer-change hooks
installed by the gutter-items.el code immediately after the definition
of add-tabs-to-gutter (or whatever that function is).
Seems unlikely, but I'll try to verify that later (I don't have access
to the machine I'm fooling around with that stuff on at the moment).
