Invalid syntax designator

Yup, "!" is not a syntax designator in XEmacs 21.5. (Nor is "|".) I
don't really understand what these are for, the Emacs documentation is
terse and doesn't really make sense.
I guess you will have to revert to an earlier version of CC Mode.
