Well, try running "xemacs -nw". If it works, then there's TTY support.

that we silently use termcap for tty-support in that case?
I believe it's the last. We only build without TTY support if you
supply the --without-tty option. I find it hard to imagine a system
that has *zero* TTY support. That's why I suggest a warning.
