I'm a modem user and I think you ought to have compressed it. But I also
don't download messages over a certain size anyway so its not a huge
inconvenience.
Actually, compressing it might well make it download slower
overall. Modems are generally very good at compressing text
documents themselves, whereas they're hopeless at (e.g.)
gzip archives. Besides, compressing it would only result
in the compressed file being uuencoded or something; that
would be even worse ;-).
