As a failsafe mechanism the development versions of Gnus make a backup
copy of all your incoming mail by default. This is usually turned off
for stable releases.
It looks like Lars overlooked this for the 5.10.1 release so anybody
using 5.10.1 who isn't aware of this setting is going to have a build
up of backup files in `gnus-directory'.
To stop the backups from being created just:
(setq mail-source-delete-incoming t)
