the issue is almost 10 years old. You were helpful so many times :-D that my
memory failed :'(

 Only think I can think of is that Ubuntu 12 only supports XKB
 protocol, not legacy keyboard configs. 
 Have you tried setxkbmap and friends? 
I will try, Ubuntu, in my
eyes is not very user friendly and the access
to that options is not as obvious as in Kubuntu..
