how to isearch non ascii

Hello for years I have searched for non ascii symbols like ä (using an us-keyboards) as follows> C-s (F5 which is bound to iso-accents-mode) and then typing in the search "a gives ä. Now I just found out that GNU emacs works differently. you use quail, set-input-method (say) latin-1-prefix and then even if you use isearch typing "a gives ä. however this does not work in Xemacs. (I could use the international keyboard provided by my Xserver, but I don't like this solution. any comments?
