Both in (emacs-version) "XEmacs 21.4 (patch 4) \"Artificial Intelligence (candidate 3)\" [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32) of Fri Jul 27 2001 on D5DC120J" and "XEmacs 21.5 (beta1) \"anise\" [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32) of Thu Jul 26 2001 on D5DC120J" give me the same behavior: Only selection of a non-directory in the Dired (Directory) dialog box updates the File name: field. Only when the file name field is not empty, the Open button makes the dialog box go away and brings up a dired buffer for that file.
