Steve: Is this in Pyrenean-pre8?
If the answer to both is "yes", then something's wrong, I'm still
getting blanching and ugly kanji (to be precise, the background---and
most everything else---of the default face is getting reset to
hardcoded values) with `custom-set-face' applied to 'default.
