But users are users, and Stefan is correct. If there's an
option
listed, some user will try it, just because.
But, in this case, this is an illogical statement. The original issue
was that XEmacs was built without debugging and, thus, was providing a
useless backtrace. The suggestion was to rebuild it with "--debug"
and try again so that a useful backtrace would be generated (along
with a statement that there really is no reason not to use "--debug").
Then it was strongly suggested that the documentation change to
reflect this suggestion to prevent this issue in the future.
Obviously, this means that "--debug" is not always used by users who
configure XEmacs and, yet, the feeling is that it should be. I would
contend that most people are more likely to download XEmacs and
"configure; make; make install" without really reading the
documentation (after all, configure is supposed to figure things out),
so changing the default to fit this approach and still have debugging
information makes sense.
I considered suggesting "--nodebug", but that didn't seem to make as
much sense as "--strip".
