While researching and verifying my changes to jka-compr to support
xz
compression, I came upon some issues:
1. Loading a compressed file marks the buffer as modified.
cp /etc/passwd .
gzip passwd
xemacs -vanilla
(require 'jka-compr)
(toggle-auto-compression)
^X^Fpasswd.gz
Note that the buffer is marked as modified. This is true in current
hg versions of both 21.4 and 21.5.
I can't reproduce in SXEmacs, and I don't recall us ever fixing something
like this. However, we did put a lot of work into fixing defects that
were uncovered by Coverity Scan[1] last year. It is quite possible that we
fixed this without even knowing it. :)
That said, I don't remember ever having trouble with compressed files
even before the Coverity thing, and I use jka-compr a _lot_. That
makes me think you should start with recent[2] 21.5 changes that were
back-ported to 21.4.
I apologise for not being more helpful and I hope I haven't sent you on
a wild goose chase.
