BTW, I tried to reproduce with a similar system (Gentoo Linux, AMD64) but could not. The main difference that I see is that I've got GCC 3.4.6, and you have 4.1.2. IIRC -fstrict-aliasing is off by default in 3.x and 4.0, but on by default in 4.1. I'll try turning it on explicitly, and also try to install 4.1.2, and see if that gives me the crash. nb. I don't have a concrete theory how this could be related to your particular crash, but I know that recent GCC complains a lot about strict aliasing and we've had problems with it in the past.
