+1 of course!
Well, by "interest" I meant "volunteer mentors" and "interested
students". It's not so obvious. ;-)

We are all so modest you know! ;-)
I don't know what is required for a GSoC mentor but I would guess
enough time
Time, yes. It's pretty clear to me now that regular communication
with the student is essential, and unfortunately often this needs to
be mentor-initiated.
an knowledge to assist the student in a serious
way. Easy to assume that it is beyond what you can do as an hobby
developer. Or?
Not true. *At least one* of the mentors *must* be a project leader
personality, willing to make judgments about people he/she doesn't
know very well. The direct mentor for a given student needs to be a
bit of an extrovert (ie, enjoys working with others) and a good match
for the student. (This is where the personal judgment thing comes in,
you see. It's important to filter out students with good-looking
projects who aren't a match for any available mentor.)
If the student has good skills and motivation, but isn't so familiar
with XEmacs, a "hobby developer" could be a good mentor in areas where
they have enough knowledge to point the student in the right direction
(including at more or less active core developers who know the area
well -- at the present time that would include folks like Mike S who
post about once a month and haven't committed in a while, but not Ben
Wing who hasn't been visible here for a couple years).
Unfortunately, there are infrastructure areas where we could
potentially use a student (eg, improving the tracker), but Google is
quite strict about projects being *coding* for *your* project.
These aren't that stringent requirements if we have several potential
mentors, because the important thing is the match.
