Configuring the build with "--with-system-malloc" fixes both issues.
What is the status of the XEmacs GNU malloc on 21th century unixen?
What can break, and what do I need to be aware of, when building with
the systen malloc lib instead of the default builtin lib?
This, or a related!?, problem surfaced in Gentoo with the introduction of glibc
2.25 where some functions were removed so that configure thought it would be
better to use the XEmacs supplied malloc. From my limited investigation it
seemed that that version of malloc had not been updated for long and would
need some work to get going.
I choose so force the use of system malloc. For some architectures that has
been the case for a long time with no apparent downsides that I'm aware of.
So I think you are good with using the system malloc.
