There may be an XEmacs bug here, but if X crashes, X is buggy too.
Please report it to your vendor.
My guess is that this is a variant of the "TABs in redisplay crash X"
bug. I don't recall whether we had a workaround or not, but I know
that in that case it was highly recommended to patch your X server.
I'm in the middle of moving right now and don't have time to further
research, but probably somebody else will pick it up shortly. If not,
I'll get back to you end of next week.
