Robert, if you've got the build and install you want, I guess it's six of one and half dozen of the other. I can't promise you that doing a "make beta" (which is equivalent to "make elcclean; make") will get you a correct build-and-install every time. On the other hand, I can't be sure that things are internally consistent with your approach of setting datarootdir and datadir in the make command.
