Gaak. But I don't have a recipe. I tried to do it from a clean tree
(specifically, "make elcclean" after having built). No go. Not with
a pruned down "./configure --prefix --with-prefix", and not with the
hairy configure command Robert posted (modified for my different CPU
and missing ESD).
I wonder if this isn't an artifact of something in the .elcs? Maybe
some path gets compiled into startup.elc? (Pure guesswork, don't take
it too seriously.)
Robert, if you've got the build and install you want, I guess it's six
of one and half dozen of the other. I can't promise you that doing a
"make beta" (which is equivalent to "make elcclean; make") will get
you a correct build-and-install every time. On the other hand, I
can't be sure that things are internally consistent with your approach
of setting datarootdir and datadir in the make command.
