Can not switch to new `comint.el' without also updating `shell.el'.
New `comint.el' does not define `make-comint-1' at all.
Right. The make-comint-1 function was temporary, until the comint.el
port was complete. Now it is complete, so that function is gone.
Can not update `shell.el' either. In xemacs 21.4 when loading
new
`shell.elc' the following error occurs.
Are you sure you have the shell.el as of 2006-06-01? Because the Lisp
error you report is the one that the June 1 update was supposed to fix.
In fact, I just did a fresh build of 21.4, pointed it at the current
packages in CVS, and used shell mode without any trouble. It is likely
that your shell.elc was not produced from the 2006-06-01 shell.el.
Recompile that elc, and you should be fine.
