Sorry for the noise! That was it. make clean; make fixes everything and it's working as expected. I think when macports updated libpng, I noticed it right away because xemacs wouldn't start anymore (missing old library version). I just deleted src/*emacs and ran make. I should have done a make clean instead. Sorry for the noise!
