This is a problem with most X installations. The generic solution is
to make sure that the X server can't find ugly fonts. See Valdis's
post.
I will note that XEmacs's (and I rather suspect GNU Emacs's, too)
Customize kinda sucks here, as AFAIK there's no clean way to specify a
foundry, and (at least on most XFree86 installations) specifying
things in point sizes (rather than pixel sizes) tends to confuse our
font.el.
So you may find that you need to use either X resources or the
set-face-font API to get good results.

This often happens if (1) 72/5 and 100 dpi fonts are cross-aliased
(XFree86 or maybe Linux distros do this), and (2) if your server
searches both the standard font directories and a font server.

You may be best off selecting pixel sizes rather than point sizes.
