I did nothing but:
C-x C-f regex.c
M-x font-lock-fontify-buffer RET
then XEmacs failed with assertion error.. BTW, I have vc and mercurial
and lazy-shot activated.
None of these are enabled by default, so you're not starting from
xemacs -vanilla.
Please see if you can find a recipe to reproduce starting from xemacs
-vanilla.
