You're just lucky, that's all. You really really want to put
(setq progress-feedback-use-echo-area t)
in your init file unless you like to live dangerously. This has not
been fixed yet to my knowledge (it's apparently a code-smashing
pointer and intermittent, as you see), so it could reappear at any
time, or on some particular file.
