There are all these programs that use some crappy toolkit (GTK+
springs to mind, even though I've used it exactly because it is
cross-platform...) that (a) looks awful anyway (b) refuses to play
nicely with the system standard for customization.
There are essentially two "standard" widget toolkits in the Unix world
at that point~: GTK+ and Qt. Everything else is peanuts.

crap on all architectures.

They won't be interested in the result. They consider their registry
imitation (gconf, now becoming dconf it seems) the right way to do
thing and X resources obsolete. They're neither writable nor XML you
see.
