FWIW, I first tried setting starttls-use-gnutls to t (the default?),
but I never got that to work either. Or at least I didn't persist.
That doesn't surprise me. gnutls, like most GNU Project programs,
goes out of its way to be incompatible with other programs (I think
it's actually just a permissive attitude toward incompatibility coming
from RMS's copyright paranoia, but when it annoys me I tend to take it
personally:-).
I don't remember exactly what happened, but the version of
gnutls-cli
that I had didn't seem to work correctly with xemacs. That's when I
set starttls-use-gnutls to nil, which worked better.
*sigh* We probably should sync this with Emacs. gnutls is
well-established now, although I suppose *most* systems with XEmacs on
them will have OpenSSL too.
