I told him about setnu.el for line numbers and suggested he send mail here to see if anybody knew of something that offered the column number functionality. William, linum.el and setnu.el show line numbers down the left hand side of the text in the buffer, but line-number-mode only displays the line number down in the modeline. Which are you trying to accomplish? Also, try M-x customize-variable line-number-mode (and ditto for column-number-mode). Does that work for you?
