That sounds like an out-of-date DOC-file, but presumably Gnus doesn't
use the DOC-file.
There's an old feature for "dynamic" extraction of docstrings from
libraries; is there any change you have that enabled? It would have
the same effect if the running Gnus were out-of-date with respect to
the files one disk.
Finally, since your whole Gnus package seems to be shadowed, I have to
wonder if that's related. (You really should get rid of those
shadows. One way is to build an XEmacs with --with-prefix=no, IIRC.
Then symlink the appropriate *packages hierarchies into the parent
directory of the directory containing the binary.)
