One thing that I really like about XEmacs is that in the 18 months or
so I've been following xemacs-beta a pretty good balance (YMMV) has
been struck between "progress" and compatibility with "quasi-religious
beliefs".

This is unfair to many of the `old timers', unless you include in
"quasi-religious belief" "large and cobwebby .emacs and .Xdefaults
that you need a map to navigate".
OK, such files are non-portable, but that's precisely what those files
are for (in an abstract sense).
