This was one thing I was thinking of trying to implement. It presumably
would not be too hard to come up with a coding system of type 'compressed
and do appropriate magic. I would still like file-coding to be on by
default. Maybe we could do this for 21.2?
I have a feeling that if we could get lstreams from between
XEmacs and the disk, I/O would be considerably faster. Loading
Lisp, loading files, saving files, everything. So I'm glum
about coding systems, since that requires the lstreams.
