The problem is that Microsoft is thumbing its nose at Adobe, I think.
Many Windows X servers simply don't supply _any_ Helvetica font.
XEmacs says it's asking for Helvetica, assumes it's going to get it
(after all, it's distributed both as bitmaps and Type 1 with the core
X distribution) and Xlib goes ahead and crashes if that's not found.
XEmacs should catch this error and not crash, but in the long run the
menubar will get a proper face and the point is moot. The user
probably wants to use Arial:bold or something like that, anyway
(however you say that in XLFD).
