Xemacs does not show lovely shell colors

In XEmacs 21.5 (beta4) "bamboo" [Lucid] (i686-pc-linux) of Fri Mar 1 2002 on il044.emt.iis.fhg.de configured using `configure --prefix=/usr --without-ldap' Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug and the precise symptoms of the bug: When running a shell in Xemacs the colors do not show up! This is especially crippling when trying to compile programs in Xemacs.
