2. About that cert error; it seems that adding these lines: [web] cacerts = /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt to my .hgrc is enough to satisfy hg as to the validity of the certificates. Here I'm using Fedora; see http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/CACertificates for more info on where the certificate files reside on other systems. 3. Thanks for porting the xemacs-packages to hg!!
