Works fine here with XEmacs 21.5.6 (cvs up'd a few minutes ago)

well, i'm embarassed to tell, but tonight M-x shell works for me
too.
i don't know what i exactly did to trigger the misbehavior, but if it
happens again i'd try to understand what happened _before_ posting
