OK, *this* crash *is* related to the fontsets.
Thank you! ;-)
To use this XEmacs on that system, I suspect you need to install
either (1) legacy X fonts, (2) a fontserver that converts TrueType
fonts to legacy fonts, or (3) an XEmacs built with Xft support.
To avoid the crash I have removed all references to helvetica in my
local .Xresources. There seems to be some fixed size fonts etc that it
finds then that allow it to show a GUI. It doesn't look pretty but it
works.
According to the SuSE package manager most fonts are already installed
but there might be some detail I'm missing. The strange thing is that
this xemacs is the one distributed with SuSE and it does not even
start.
Because something in lwlib is passing a NULL to XFontsOfFontSet, I
think I can provide a patch that at least warns about the situation,
and exits gracefully. But it won't help you to run XEmacs without
installing fonts. Is it worth it?
No I don't think so. I just want to share my experiences with the
xemacs distributed with SLES. Maybe someone will find it useful.
Personally I roll my own xemacs on that system but, use xft, and seem
to have all the fonts I need.
Yours
