Start XEmacs, start gnuserv, then do gnuclient -nw, i.e. without Gnus.

let's try... when i switched from gnus to the scratch buffer the
window shrinked again, now it's very small... anyway the results are
36 and 3
I'm not interested in the window dimensions you see, but in the values
of the expressions (frame-width) and (frame-height).
