Dear Bug Team!
I updated several packages last night. All seemed to go well, but this
morning I could not start either gnus or VM. The minibuffer said
something like (I'm sorry I did not write down the exact message)
"unable to load dig".
Here are the packages I believe I updated...

I tried uninstalling individual packages to try to figure out which
one was causing problems, but I kept getting other problems. I
couldn't simply uninstall mail-lib, for example, because then gnus and
VM would fail for a different reason. But I don't know how to revert
to the previous version either.
I tried upgrading XEmacs from 21.4.10 to 21.4.13, but that didn't
change anything. So I moved the xemacs-packages directory and
installed the sumo-tarball. Now all is well. If I now check the
packages, I see that the packages in question are at older versions.
