I have XEmacs installed now.
I read the INSTALL file in the top level source directory and
what it says makes sense and the text in the file answered some
other questions I had wondered about before.
I only had 2 minor pauses:
The first was looking to see which of the libraries XEmacs can use
were already installed. An Ixquick search showed the command
was:
/sbin/ldconfig -p |grep <full/partial library name, eg. xpm>
I would suggest a line showing what command be added
at that point in the file. But I understand if someone feels that
that is something I should know about my OS and doesn't
think it needs to be added.
The second, was under trying XEmacs without installing it.
The webpage I read previously:
http://www.xemacs.org/Install/index.html

If you're trying XEmacs without installing it (make all), start it
with ./src/xemacs from the top-level directory in the XEmacs source tree.
I took that to mean that to try it out without installing, you had to:
1. cd to the top level source directory
2. issue the command ./src/xemacs
When I read the INSTALL file on that step, it has the statement:
"RUNNING MAKE
============
Run `make' in the top directory of the XEmacs distribution to finish
building XEmacs in the standard way. The final executable file is
named `src/xemacs'. You can execute this file in place without
copying it, if you wish; then it automatically uses the sibling
directories ../lisp, ../lib-src, ../info."
Which was not clear to me that you have to be in the top level
source directory before issuing the command:
./src/xemacs
True, they told you to run make from that directory, but at least
in my mind, I didn't understand that it was *required* that you
be in the top level source directory to try out XEmacs without
installing it.
I suggest that it be changed a little bit to make it clear that you
have to be in the top level source directory to try it out.
I hope nobody thinks I am out of place sharing what I stumble
over or think can be clearer.
Other than those 2 small things everything was clear in the
INSTALL file and a big thank you for those heroes who wrote it.
Sure helped me a lot!
You know Stephen, you said you might make the page on the
website just point to the INSTALL file, that might be a good idea.
I noticed in reading the FAQ (as the INSTALL file says to) that
there are places in the FAQ that say:
"The file `INSTALL' in the top-level directory says how to bring
up XEmacs on Unix..."
Which is what you are saying.
Thanks again,
Steven Mitchell

The definitive instructions are in the file INSTALL in the top
directory of the sources. I think for now I'm just going to remove
this page, or make it point to the INSTALL file.
