I'm back and it's night.
You are on a Mac? Have you port installed? You got just then install
xpdf.
Yes, I'm on a Mac. I did not install XEmacs using port install, if that's
what you mean. I compiled it from source.
I looked through the stuff in /usr/X11R6/bin and in /opt
and find no xpdf.
I haven't updated my ports in almost two years. I'm not in a situation
where I can get the swift professional help I used to when I was working
as an engineer if something horrid happens, so I don't experiment
with things as often as I used to.

You mean you hit the save button at the beginning of the customise
buffer then it done but your change is not saved?
No, I hit the Set button. I don't want to Save it unless it works.
Ok there are several solutions to this. But let me propose you
something. I just finished the synchronisation of auctex 11.88 to the
official xemacs package system. It will take some time before it will
show up officially.
In 11.88 the issue is as I said different (besides you will have
automatic forward and backward search for dvi *and* pdf files). Could
you install please Skim or (okular via port)
Are you willing to play the guinea pig? Then I would send the pre
release pkg together with some instructions.
Actually, I'm not able to do that at this time. I simply have too much
other stuff happening right now to be able to take the time to
experiment with things.
If I can't find a solution to the simple problem I'm trying to solve, I
can live with the kluge of replacing %V with open %d and backspacing
over the dvi and replacing it with pdf. I could even put what I want in a
register. It's not the *right* solution, but it's possible that the
time I spend
finding the right solution is likely to be all out of proportion to the time
I save given that I use LaTeX only once in a few months these days.
Thanks a million.
