Dear Bug Team!
I'm sure this one has been reported already, but I've not been able to
find a fix.
I recently got a Vista system and upon installing XEmacs, I was
surprised
to find that M-x shell fails. A brief search of the internet revealed
some discussions but no remedies.

I have no clue what the problem is. But if you are comfortable running a 21.5
version of XEmacs, [1] recommends that you get XEmacs 21.5.27 from
http://ftp.xemacs.org/windows/testing/ which should solve the problem. (The
thread was forwarded and continued at [2] but there are no answers there.)
Just curious: which version of Windows Vista are you on? Home Basic? Ultimate?
