What does that do? C-s saves something, but I get prompted.

I had a nicely formatted Word paragraph and pressed C-e (I think) and
suddenly it became centered. I think undo didn't work (either because
it didn't and I didn't notice for a while and did more editing) so I
spent a long time getting the paragraph back in shape.
Alt-d and Alt-f[1] in OSX terminals running bash don't do what I want,
but nothing catastrophic, just annoyance.

[1] I mapped Option (I think) to Alt for xemacs and set up my OSX
terminals to recognize Option as a meta. Maybe I should change
it to some other key?
