Yeah, I tried emacs 23. I'll take a look at 22 and see how that goes.
I took a look at emacs 22.3. eldoc is much simpler has, essentially, no
dependencies. Plus, it seems to work with slime. I didn't try all the
features of eldoc, but the one that I wanted (having a description of
the function displayed in the minibuffer) appears to work fine.
